Surprise Kennel evolved from the Palmay Family's passion for this wonderful breed.
The kennel is owned and operated as a family business that strive to produce the best quality Chinese Shar Pei possible. OUr philosophy is that 'a breeder should be willing and able to improve the breed through their breeding program, or not breed at all'.
All of our dogs are home raised and loved. Most of their time is spent in our home, visiting with guests or just lazing in front of the fireplace. Our home and kennel are set on approximately 8 acres that hosts a pond and forest as well as a fenced area for all of our dogs to exercise and have fun in. We are located just 60 minutes north of Toronto, Ontario in the beautiful Hills of Mulmur.
Our family's first introduction to this breed was in the late 1970's when Sharon was involved in bring one of the first Shar Pei into Canada. We did not, however, start actively breeding and showing until the early 1990's. Sharon and Jennifer are members in good standing of The Canadian Kennel Club, The Chinese Shar Pei Club of America, North American Shar Pei Rescue, Canadian Association for Shar Pei Rescue and also The Chinese Shar Pei Club of Canada. Sharon has held an executive position on the board of the Chinese Shar Pei Club of Canada for several years and currently is the First Vice-President, while Jennifer is the current Show Chair Person for the club.
Terry while running a very busy dental practice, still finds the time to help with the day to day activities of the dogs. Terry has always had a very special place in his heart for this loving breed.
Daughter Jennifer is active in showing and training of the dogs and has just recently taken on the responsibility of the overall health and well being of our animals after receiving her Registered Veterinary Technician Certification.
Sharon has worked closely with Jennifer in the showing and handling of their dogs for many years. When Sharon is not managing the kennel she is running the family Bed and Breakfast business.
Both Sharon and Jennifer have taken, and continue to take, continuing education courses and seminars both locally and internationally on improving the Chinese Shar Pei. They keep up-to-date with ongoing breeding programs and health issues that will help to produce the healthiest dogs possible.
We are very active in Shar Pei Rescue, not only in Canada but also in the United States. Sharon is a founding member of the non profit organization Canadian Association for Shar Pei Rescue (CASPR). They strongly believe that every dog deserves to have a loving, safe home!
The Palmays' dogs have participated in many activities, such as visiting hospitals, local parades, public information booths, photo shoots and fund raisers such as walk-a-thons. Not only have they helped raise money for the breed associations, but also for Rotary Clubs that both Sharon and Terry are very active in.
